UPDATED: The North Devon Link Road is currently closed and both drivers have been airlifted to hospital after being cut from van and lorry by fire fighters.

UPDATE MAY 23, 9.20AM: Police confirmed the road was closed for nine-and-a-half hours after the collision yesterday (Monday).

Officers are awaiting an update on the condition of the casualties. More as we have it.

UPDATE 15.45: The North Devon Link Road is still closed - and is set to remain so for some time.

Police have reported ‘significant’ traffic issues in the area and have urged motorists to avoid the area ahead of rush hour.

A police spokesman said: “The driver of the van has sustained serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.

“He has been extracted from the vehicle by the fire service and airlifted to Derriford Hospital by air ambulance. He was the only person in the van.

“The HGV driver was also trapped and has been extracted by the fire service. Has sustained a serious arm injury and has been airlifted to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital by a second air ambulance.

“The passenger in the lorry sustained minor injuries - described as walking wounded.”

The road is blocked and closures have been put on at Tiverton and Barnstaple sides, though diversions are in place.

UPDATE 14.30: Both drivers in a serious collision on the North Devon Link Road have been airlifted to hospital.

Fire fighters from Witheridge, South Molton and Tiverton, as well as the heavy rescue vehicle from Middlemore, have attended the collision on the North Devon Link Road.

On arrival they confirmed both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and got to work extracting the van driver.

The van driver suffered leg, arm and head injuries and was airlifted to hospital.

The lorry driver was also cut from the cab and he had leg, arm and head injuries.

He was also taken to hospital by air ambulance.

The A361 is currently experiencing long tail-backs and is expected to be closed for some hours yet.

The police drone unit is now at the scene and tweeted: “We’re here, lots of emergency services vehicles coming & going so please be aware. Please avoid the area, already lots of queuing traffic.”

13.55: The A361 Link Road is closed in both directions and the air ambulance has landed after a serious collision this afternoon (Monday).

The collision involved a lorry and a van at Moortown Cross near South Molton and the road is completely blocked.

Police reported three casualties, including the driver of a van who has potential life-threatening injuries.

The van driver was the sole-occupant and was extracted from the vehicle. He is now with the air ambulance.

The driver of the lorry was also trapped and the passenger was described as walking wounded.

The lorry driver is not thought to have serious injuries and is being extracted by fire fighters.

Diversions are currently in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.

There are reports of queues on lanes leading to the North Devon Link Road in the area, with motorists describing them as a ‘total standstill’.

The police drone unit is also set to attend and the road could be closed for some time yet.
