‘Urban Extension’ on the cards
An outline planning application is being prepared for up to 950 new homes.
PLANS for an ‘urban extension’ to a North Devon town are on the cards outlining the creation of up to 950 new homes.
The land between Abbotsham Road and Clovelly Road in Bideford was earmarked for a future residential development in the North Devon and Torridge Joint Core Strategy.
The site borders the location of the proposed Atlantic Park development of a Premier Inn, Brewers Fayre restaurant and a McDonalds’s.
The strategy outlines the need for 1,500 new dwellings, including affordable housing, on the 68 hectare site.

Bloor Homes Ltd, which controls the land, submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) scoping opinion to Torridge District Council this week.
This stated that Bloor Homes would not achieve the 1,500 dwellings and would instead apply for ‘up to 950’.

When submitted, the outline planning proposal is expected to include the residential development as well as a ‘local centre’ and areas of open space.
The strategy also outlines the need for ‘integrated community uses including a new primary school’ and improved links between the two main roads.
The EIA will assess the positive and negative impacts of the possible development.
