THE A386 between Brandis Corner and Chapel Cross near Merton was closed this morning (Mon) after a van which has overturned and became embedded in the bank. Police, fire and ambulance services were called to the scene at 6.55am after the white Vauxhall Vivaro van, believed to be a Rentokil vehicle, ended up on its side. The male driver was free of the vehicle by the time emergency services arrived, but was taken to North Devon District Hospital with back pain. The van was carrying caustic soda a hazardous chemical and fire crews from Hatherleigh and Torrington were scrambled to the scene. It was feared the chemicals could leak as the vehicle was righted but fire fighters entered the back of van using hydraulic cutting equipment to investigate.
