Cross Street and Butchers Row remain closed as a result of the incident, which occurred earlier this afternoon (Thursday).

An 80-year-old man is in critical condition after being reportedly hit by a van in the centre of Barnstaple.

Police said the incident involving a white Ford Transit happened outside Caffe Nero, on the corner of Butchers Row, shortly before 12.20pm this afternoon (Thursday).

Ambulances arrived at the scene, with paramedics classing the man's injuries as life threatening.

Cross Street and Butchers Row remain closed as a result of the accident.

Police confirmed that the man had been taken to North Devon District Hospital where he remains in a critical condition with serious head injuries.

The police's serious collision unit is currently investigating and anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call police on 101, quoting reference 0347 of September 15.
