A ROYAL Navy Bomb Disposal squad was called to Westward Ho! on Saturday after a phosphorus was discovered on the beach. The ordnance was discovered in the Pebble Ridge and the coastguard and police were alerted to the situation at around 8.30pm. Bomb disposal experts were unable to carry out a controlled explosion that evening as it was getting dark. A Royal Navy spokesman said the device was a phosphorus flare which is carried on boats in case they get into trouble. At around 8.45am on Sunday a detonation was safely carried out on Northam Burrows.
