JSA claimant figures drop below 1,000 for the first time since 2010

North Devon unemployment dropped to below 1,000 in June, according to official figures.

954 people claimed Job Seekers Allowance in the area last month - the lowest figure for three years. The figure was 1,128 in June 2012.

Executive Member for Economic Regeneration, Councillor Malcolm Prowse, says: "This is great news for North Devon. As a seasonal district, we can't be complacent as we would traditionally expect levels to drop around now anyway, in time for the summer holidays.

"However, last month's figures are even better than this time last year. So it really does reflect a step in the right direction overall."

The council also claims to be continuing its commitment to boosting the economy follwing the Planning Committee's approval of an application to develop one of Barnstaple's key sites at Anchorwood Bank.

The aim is to regenerate a large industrial brownfield site, with construction and commercial jobs created, along with a supermarket and housing.
