A North Devon plumber is planning to reinvest his windfall after scooping £50,000 in a national competition.

Mark Berry, 40, of Mark Berry Plumbing & Heating Limited in Umberleigh, won the top cash prize available in the Plumbase competition, after entering the prize draw as he stocked up on trade supplies at the Whiddon Valley branch in Barnstaple.

With prizes of £50k, £10k, and £5k up for grabs, Mark was fortunate enough to beat 9,555 plumbers around the country to the highly sought after first prize.

He plans to put his winnings towards buying a plot of land to build a unit for the company, which has outgrown its current premises.

He is also planning a summer party staff as a thank you for their hard work.

Mr Berry said: "It still hasn't really sunk in. As far as I'm concerned, these things never happen, so it's just unbelievable. I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved.

"I heard about the competition through my local branch in Barnstaple. Myself or my staff are in and out of branch on a daily basis sourcing everything from boiler parts, to sanitaryware and fittings. We've got a great working relationship and long may it continue."

Plumbase's Big Cash Bash initiative was launched in partnership with brands such as Viessmann, Fernox, Barlo, Polypipe, Roman and ThermaQ earlier this year.

Barnstaple Plumbase branch manager Richard Bird said: "We've got a great working relationship with Mark, so we were so pleased to hear that he was able to grab the top cash prize in this competition.

"Support from professionals like Mark is vital to our local business and competitions like these truly show how tradespeople can reap the rewards of shopping locally too. We'd like to extend our thanks to Viessmann, Fernox, Barlo, Polypipe, Roman and ThermaQ, as without them, this competition simply wouldn't have been possible."
