A GROUP of workers from a Bideford factory are about to embark on a "bum-numbing" 1,000-mile cycle adventure in aid of North Devon Hospice.
The self-titled "Four Numb Bums" from Tyco Electronics are setting off on a country-spanning two-week bike ride from John O' Groats to Land's End on Sunday.
Gavin Bowden, Gary Suggate, Chris Cloak and Andrew Grigg will be pounding the pedals with support from drivers Frazer Moore and John Finnamore, who'll be encouraging them all the way.
The ride is being undertaken in memory of Gary's mum, Barbara Davidson, who received care at the hospice. They hope to raise 5,000 for the charity and are already well on the way having raised 1,500 at a quiz night at the Pig On the Hill at Westward Ho!; 950 during a collection outside Morrisons; and 1,400 during a whip-round at work.

Gary, from Bideford, said: "We know it's going to be tough but very worthwhile. I sadly lost my mum a few years ago and she received care at North Devon Hospice so I know how important it is for us to take on this ride and raise lots of sponsorship while we're at it."
The boys are being helped out by a number of local businesses which have donated prizes for a fund-raising raffle, and South Fork Cycles in Braunton, which has helped kit them out with the right gear.

Gavin, from Westward Ho!, said the idea came after completing the hospice's Coast to Coast cycle event last year.
"We had always talked about doing some kind of challenge in memory of Gary's mum, and when we all did the Coast to Coast event, we felt pretty good at the end of it," he said.
"We then thought that if we can ride 70 miles in a day, why not try and do that every day for two weeks and cycle down the whole country! It probably wasn't the soundest logic, but we are committed now and training hard to make this a reality."
Emma Lowe, from North Devon Hospice's fundraising team, said: "We are really proud of the guys for taking on the challenge. Without the generosity of the local community, we wouldn't be able to care for local people just like Gary's Mum."
