THE fire service and police are investigating the cause of a fire which started in a semi-detached house at Boards Court, East-the-Water, Bideford, just after midnight this morning (Friday).

A man, a woman and a dog escaped from the upper floor using a ladder provided by neighbours. They were treated at the scene by ambulance personnel for slight smoke inhalation.

Two fire appliances from Bideford and one from Appledore attended the incident after being alerted by several calls from members of the public.

The ground floor of the two-storey property was well alight. The blaze was put out by fire fighters using four sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets
