Police have arrested two men from Plymouth on suspicion of theft after incident at Barnstaple Sainsbury’s on Saturday.

Two men have been arrested after allegedly attempting to steal a trolley full of alcohol from Sainsbury's in Barnstaple.

Police were called to the store in Roundswell, Barnstaple, at around 6.10pm on Saturday.

Officers, including a police dog unit, launched a search in the area for the two men who had made off on foot.

It is also alleged a member of staff was kicked by one of the offenders when he challenged them.

A 27-year-old man from Plymouth was detained nearby and arrested on suspicion of assaulting occasioning actual bodily harm and theft from a shop.

He has been released on bail until 11 October.

A 46-year-old man from Plymouth was also arrested in Plymouth in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He has been arrested on suspicion of theft from a shop and been bailed until October 10.

The alcohol, valued at £262, was recovered at the scene and the staff member sustained a minor elbow injury.
