POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a distressing large-scale disturbance involving up to 40 people in Bideford town centre. Two people were injured and one received ambulance treatment at the scene following the incident, thought to have started at the top of Cooper Street at 12.40am on Sunday. The trouble then moved into Mill Steet, Lower Gunstone Street and New Street before police were able to intervene. Sergeant Paul McWhinnie from Bidefords neighbourhood beat team said: We are appealing for witnesses because we want to fully understand exactly what caused this incident and we want to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. A 42-year-old man from Bideford and a 34-year-old man from the Barnstaple area were both arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault. Following the initial investigation and interview, both have been released on police bail while enquiries continue. Sgt McWhinnie added: This was a serious incident and would have been distressing for some of the people who witnessed it. We would appeal to everyone who saw any aspect of this incident to make contact in order for us to piece together the full sequence of events.
