BARNSTAPLE is set to sign formal charters to twin with Susa, in Northern Italy, next month. The twinning, as revealed in the Gazette last February, has developed from exchange visits to Susa by youngsters from Newport Community School, and blossomed into an agreement which will be formally signed at the Mayor's Charity Ball on Friday, February 8.The Piedmont mountain town, situated 32 miles West of Turin, has a population of approximately 7,000 and is similar to Barnstaple in that it is a regional centre with a traditional market, with close links to the surrounding villages.Barnstaple, which already has links with towns in Germany, France and the USA, has invited the Mayor of Susa and the regional president to mark the historic twinning at the black tie ball at the Barnstaple Hotel.Tickets to the ball, also featuring a grand draw and auction, as well as dancing to Steinway and Rickenbacker, are available from Barnstaple Town Council on (01271) 373311.
