DEVON County Council is reminding hoteliers and caravan park owners that they need to ensure that all their televisions are ready for the Digital TV Switchover starting this April. "Customers expect a working telly in their guest room, cottage or caravan so it is incredibly important to make sure that they are ready for the switchover before the holiday season starts" said County Councillor Des Hannon, Executive Member responsible for helping DigitalUK to make a smooth switchover for Devon."In the current economic conditions we can expect many more people to take their holidays in Devon this year. That's a big opportunity for our tourist industry but if we want those visitors to keep coming it's important to make TV preparations now." A television without digital equipment will not work after the digital TV switchover which takes place from April to August this year with the four analogue transmitters serving Devon being switched off in phrases over a number of weeks. The Huntshaw Cross transmitter serving most of North Devon is going digital on July 1.Viewers will initially lose BBC2 and start to receive a sub-set of digital channels if they have digital equipment. At the end of the phased switchover the remaining analogue channels will the switched off and the remaining digital channels will become available.Tourist businesses are encouraged to find out what changes may be required to equipment in rooms and the TV reception system, such as the aerial for the whole building, well before the switchover date. Councillor Hannon said: "This may not be top of the list at the moment for tourist businesses, but when the holiday season starts again at Easter it will be harder to do. Remember some places start to switch in April!"Advice and information is available from Digital UK's website www.digitaluk.co.uk or by phoning 08456 50 50 50.
