APPLEDORE lifeboat went to the aid of a tug, lost in thick sea mist when approaching the Taw/Torridge estuary bar.In rapidly decreasing visibility, the skipper of the 70-foot vessel on passage from Ilfracombe to Instow yesterday (Thursday) called on the coastguard for help.Appledore's all-weather lifeboat was sent to her aid and she was escorted safely to Appledore Quay. The same vessel had made a failed attempt to cross the bar the previous day. On that occasion the tide was ebbing and the weather poor. On seeking guidance, the skipper was advised by Appledore lifeboat coxswain Martin Cox against attempting the entrance over the bar and to wait off Clovelly overnight before returning on a rising tide the next day.
