North Devon Theatres Trust is looking to buy the leasehold for the Queens Theatre and Landmark Theatre. The trusts plans for the Barnstaple and Ilfracombe theatres were revealed at a North Devon Council meeting last night (Wednesday). Both theatres are currently owned by North Devon Council but theatre trust executive chairman Richard Purchase said the move would help the trust to achieve ongoing financial resilience.Last month, the trust laid off director Alan Dodd amid an ongoing squeeze of public subsidies.Mr Purchase said: Our vision is for North Devon Theatres Trust to be the cultural hub for the region, as well as being a high quality community facility used by groups, organisations and businesses. We aim to become a resource that demonstrably supports the local and visitor economy, drives employment within the creative industries and brings and enhanced cultural offer to the region. To achieve ongoing financial resilience, we have ambition to buy the leasehold for the Queens and Landmark theatres. Once achieved, we will reinvigorate our charity into a forward-thinking enterprise which will generate income, invest in our buildings and improve sustainability. North Devon Council leader Des Brailey said the trust had shown an interest but no formal offer had been made. There has been an approach by the trust and they have gone back to the board to considering making an offer, he said. We would look at any offer that they make because each year we are giving them part of their revenue this year nearly £300,000.
