Councillor Alan Whittle, who was lead member for the environment at Torridge District Council, has died.

Tributes have been paid to a serving Torridge District Councillor who has died.

Alan Whittle was ward member for Hartland and Bradworthy, as well as lead member for environment.

He was elected in May 2015 and also sat on the council's overview and scrutinty committee and leadership team.

Councillor Jane Whittaker, leader of TDC, said: "Alan was a very active member of our councillor family.

"He took on the role of lead member for the environment at the beginning of this council's term and was hugely involved this role, working diligently for residents not only in his ward but for residents across the whole of Torridge.

"I was greatly saddened to hear of his death and his considerable contribution to our council will be very much missed."

Jenny Wallace, head of paid service at Torridge, said: "Alan was a pleasure to work with.

"He tackled his role with great enthusiasm and his position was always fully supported by comprehensive research.

"I'm sad that we have lost such a dedicated and effective councillor."

Janet Williams, environmental health and community safety manager, added: "Councillor Whittle was passionate about the environment and about the district and it was a pleasure to work with such a gentleman. He'll be greatly missed."

Flags will be flown at half mast at Council buildings out of respect to Councillor Whittle.
