Tributes have been paid to a former Bideford mayor who has died.

Brian Shury was a long-standing Torridge District councillor from November 1990 until May 2003 and represented the East-the-Water Ward in Bideford.

He was also mayor of Bideford from 1992-1993.

During his time on the district council, he served on several committees including the foot and mouth emergency committee in 2001.

Councillor Peter Christie, ward member for Bideford North, said: “Brian was a councillor who loved Bideford especially East-the-Water.

“He was a bluff character who always put his views over forcefully and as mayor he ensured the town council ran smoothly. He will be missed.”

Jenny Wallace, head of paid services at Torridge, said: “Brian was a really caring man who loved the area and relished his role as a councillor and representing and supporting residents in his ward.”

Jon Walter, governance manager at TDC, added: “I always enjoyed working with Brian as you always knew exactly where you were with him. He was forceful and yet a real gentleman at the same time.”

The flag at Riverbank House will be flying at half-mast in respect.
