CLOVELLY paid tribute to its own "silver darlings" at the second Clovelly Herring Festival on Sunday.As an early morning mist lifted, visitors enjoyed a celebration of the humble fish, once the mainstay of the village economy.The all-day event featured traditional shanty singers and singing fishwives as well as the opportunity to sample the great-tasting fish, together with locally produced ciders and home-baked bread.Once sold all over England, the Clovelly herring are caught today by only a handful of boats using sustainable fishing methods.
