Tribute to Bill Tanton
14/1/2009: BILL Tanton, former chairman of Torridge District Council and widely known as an amateur weather forecaster, has died at the age of 81.
14/1/2009: BILL Tanton, former chairman of Torridge District Council and widely known as an amateur weather forecaster, has died at the age of 81.
James Morrish, Leader of the council, said: "Bill was a very 'local' man and gave so much to the community he served and the district he loved to call home."
Councillor Royston Johns said: "It was a privilege to serve on the council with Bill. He enjoyed a busy life and will be missed by all who knew him."
Mr Tanton, a farmer, entered local politics when he won a seat on the former Torrington Rural Council in 1968. He was chairman of Torridge District Council in 1980-81.

He was probably best known in the West Country for his amateur weather forecasts, for which he claimed an 80 per cent success rate.
