Drivers help talk the man to safety after Sunday afternoon drama on Taw Bridge

A man who climbed the wrong side of the railings on Barnstaple's Taw Bridge was talked down by passersby and an off duty policeman this afternoon (Sunday).

Police received reports from the public at around 1.30pm today and several drivers stopped to help, as well as an off duty police dog handler.

They were able to talk the man around and assist him back to safety.

Inspector Graham Thomas said the man was left in the care of family members who were at the scene.

“Thank you to all the members of the public who stopped, we appreciate what they did,” he said.

The bridge was closed for a few minutes while the incident was going on but is now reopen.
