Town council elects new mayor and deputy

New civic leaders poised to take the chains in Barnstaple.

BARNSTAPLE Town Council will have new civic leaders for the forthcoming municipal year.

The council nominated its mayor elect and deputy mayor elect for 2012-13 at a council meeting in the Guildhall on Monday night.

Current Deputy Mayor Cllr Lesley Brown is set to take over from Cllr Ian Roome, who has held the chains for two consecutive terms.

Cllr Val Elkins is poised to become Deputy Mayor.

It was the first time the chairmanship of the council has been contested for two years.

Cllr Ricky Knight stood against Cllr Brown, while Cllr John Matthews stood against Cllr Elkins.
