STRANGE and colourful characters have been appearing around Torrington in recent weeks as part of the town's annual scarecrow competition.
Nearly 60 local entrants have taken up the challenge of this year's fun event, which runs until the end of this month.
There are prizes for the winners, with points being awarded for originality, quality, and attention to detail.
Cavalier Dick Matthews said: "It brightens up the town and the tourists love it! And with the 'barbecue summer' failing to turn up, many local parents have said how pleased they have been that the scarecrow competition has given their children something to do in the school holidays.
