Torrington is gearing up for its annual Mayfair celebrations next week. The anticipated event will be held on Thursday, May 4, followed by the carnival on May 6. Poppy Rooke will be May Queen this year, with crowner Tia Lewis and heralds Billy Mitchell and Matthew Lawton. Attendants are: Holly Chanell, Isabella Maslanek, Kacey Ashton, Katie Maxam, Cadee Willoughby, Matilda Vallely, Isabel Tucker, Lola Barber. The week will begin with the Torridgeside Amateur Swimming Club gala at the towns pool at 6pm on Friday. On Wednesday, May 3, rehearsals of the may pole dancing and crowning will be held at 6pm in the town square. But Thursday is the main event, with celebrations starting with Torrington Silver Band playing around the town at 8.45am. The bells of St Michaels and All Angels Church will ring at 9am, and from 9.45am-10am there will be an open-air service in the Square. Shortly after 10am, there will be English country dancing from Great Torrington Bluecoat pupils, followed by floral dancing for all. Torrington Cavaliers will be entertaining the crowds with their hotly-anticipated top-secret performance. And at midday, the fair proclamation will be read, followed by the crowning of the May Queen. There will be entertainment in the Square throughout the rest of the afternoon, with the Torridge Cup Final at Vicarage Field at 7.30pm. And on Friday, May 5, will be the annual Round the Tree Races, organised by the Torrington Amateur Athletic Club. Registration starts at 6pm. On Saturday, May 6, is Torrington Carnival, to cap off the week. This years carnival queen is Erin Rice-Smith, with attendants Phoebe Johnson and Hettie Baker.
