A celebration has taken place in Torrington to mark the retirement of an inspirational and visionary local head teacher with a national reputation.

Mary Pearson, head teacher of Great Torrington Bluecoat Church of England Infants and Nursery School and the Bluecoat Children's Centre, retires this week after 16 years at the school.

Friends and colleagues came together to mark the occasion in a celebration supported by local people and businesses.

Mrs Pearson is respected throughout the county and at a national level, gaining a reputation for her pioneering work in early years education. She successfully set up and established the children's centre attached to the Torrington school and worked with national bodies to construct the qualification now required of all children's centre managers.
