Torrington man was twice the drink-drive limit when he spotted police officers and skidded his car to a halt.

A Torrington man who was over the drink-drive limit 'panicked' and skidded his car when he saw police.

Sam Paine, 26, of Burwood Road, pleaded guilty to drink-driving in the early hours of April 4 when he blew twice the legal limit.

The graphic designer was driving along Trafalgar Drive 'at speed' when he spotted police officers and applied the brakes.

The police sergeant, who had been dealing with another incident, approached Paine and said he smelt of 'intoxicating liquor'.

He was arrested and breathalysed where he was found to have 72 microgrammes of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Paine was banned from driving for 20 months and fined £240 by North Devon Magistrates. He was ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
