Torrington is gearing up for its May Fair celebrations with the choosing of its May Queen and entourage.The town has also selected its carnival queen and attendants. Great Torrington Bluecoats pupil Saffron Sanders, 10, has been selected as the May Queen with Amy Watson, 11, as crowner. The heralds will be Alex Bunn and Jack Lewington and attendants are: Natasha Howard, Crystal Stevenson, Marnie Macey-Withey, Tilly Thorne, Frankie Potts, Maddison Harding, Chloe MacDonald-Bale and Phoebe Berry. Saffron, who was an attendant three years ago, is following in the footsteps of family members. She said: My sister Polly was a crowner and an attendant before as well. Torrington Mayor Cathrine Simmons said the committee was coming along well with plans for this years event. We have Toni Alexander as our dressmaker, who works for Covent Garden Opera House but was born and bred in Torrington, she said. After May Fair on Thursday, May 5, will be Torrington Carnival, on Saturday, May 7. This years carnival queen will be Great Torrington School pupil Ellie-Louise Curley. Ellie-Louise, a keen dancer who performs with the Streetz crew, will be attended to by Isabelle Webb and Molly Magarotto. Ms Simmons added: I was impressed with the high standard of the applications and all the applicants interviewed very well. There were four people on the interviewing panel from the carnival committee and they hoped this experience would be helpful when the youngsters go on to apply for jobs.
