Torrington awaits its big day

TORRINGTON is all geared up to celebrate its biggest day of the year on Thursday - May Fair Day.Hundreds of visitors will join the locals for an exciting programme of events in The Square, culminating in the proclamation of the fair and the crowning of the May Queen herself at 12 noon.The day starts at 8.45am when Torrington Town Band will play at several locations around the town. The bells of St Michael and All Angels' Church will ring out at 9am.After that, all eyes will be on The Square, where there will be a united open air service from 9.45am, followed by a country dancing display by children from Burwood School.Floral dancing will take place from 10.30am and then the Torrington Cavaliers charity group will present a dancing extravaganza on a theme which is being kept secret.Singing will come from the Torrington Cavaliers Entertainers.After the crowning, acoustic duo Jax will entertain.The afternoon will feature dancing by all Torrington schoolchildren and a series of wacky races presented by Torrington Cavaliers. Members have constructed various home-made karts in which they will race around The Square.Refreshments will be served at St Michael and All Angels' Church, where there will also be a floral display on tomorrow, Friday and Saturday.On Friday at 7pm, Torrington Amateur Athletic Club is organising the Round the Tree race for competitors over the age of 11. Registration will take place at 6pm.On Saturday, the grand carnival parade will leave the Old Bowling Green at 6.15pm. Rowlands' amusements is operating at the Barley Grove car park all week.
