Councillors vote for council tax increase come April but are trying to ‘limit burden’ on bill payers.

Torridge District Councillors have voted to increase council tax by 1.99 per cent in April.

The full council meeting on Monday agreed to the increase, which ampunts to £2.90 a year for a Band D property.

This would bring the council’s precept for a Band D property to £148.66 a year.

Councillor Jane Whittaker, TDC leader, said: “We have tried to limit the burden on our council tax payers by not increasing the amounts for next year beyond that which is necessary to protect and maintain effective front line services, those which we know are essential to Torridge residents.”

Councillor James Morrish, TDC deputy leader, added: “We have worked hard to limit the impact on council tax payers, which is reflected in this minimal increase in council tax for next year, despite the option for higher increases being sanctioned by government.”
