Peter Le Maistre has resigned as a district councillor after being charged with failure to provide a specimen for analysis on Monday.

A Torridge district councillor has resigned after being arrested in Bideford on Monday.

Peter Le Maistre, 72, of Northam, was charged with failure to provide a specimen for analysis after he was arrested in Bridge Street following a full council meeting.

Torridge District Council’s leader Jane Whittaker confirmed yesterday (Wednesday) Mr Le Maistre had resigned from his position as a district councillor.

The Conservative councillor held the seat for Westward Ho! ward and was the lead member for internal resources.

Mr Le Maistre is due to appear at North Devon Magistrates’ Court on December 1.
