TORRIDGE District Council has been named as one of the best to work for in the country.

The achievement follows a staff survey conducted by Best Companies, which put Torridge as top council in the South West and sixth overall.

Council leader James Morrish said: "In 2003 Torridge was not only a poor authority, but also one where staff were unhappy and, as a result, services suffered. Since then a positive people strategy has progressively addressed some long standing pay issues and personnel processes. Over the past year, in particular, the focus has been on developing the skills and capabilities of our team and this was realised when Torridge was recognised as an Investor in People towards the end of 2009."

The Council's head of human resources, John Edwards, added: "The survey confirms what we already knew, that staff are really committed to providing excellent services. In turn, the council will continue to adopt a very positive approach towards its employees, supporting them so that they can continue to develop themselves for the benefit of local people".
