THE Torridge "Green Team" has been strengthened by the appointment of a Clean Neighbourhoods Officer. The district council has created the new cross-service team to help address issues such as dog fouling, littering, fly-tipping, graffiti and nuisance vehicles. New officer Dean Smith will be based within the Environmental Protection Team and will work closely with the council's recently appointed Environmental Crime Officer. He will assist the Animal Welfare Officer and others in environmental protection, providing a pro-active and high visibility presence. He will focus on educating offenders as well as formal enforcement, but will have a range of powers, including the ability to issue fixed penalty notices. Initially he will concentrate on areas where dog controls are known to need attention.David Morgan, the council's Environmental Protection Manager, said: "Torridge District Council is committed to keeping our local environment safe, clean and green for residents and visitors. The creation of this new Green Team demonstrates the determination of the council to deliver on that commitment and I believe it will make a real difference in the battle to reduce serious environmental problems."
