THERE is an opportunity for over 50s to get in shape thanks to a new swimming and fitness scheme being opened at the Torridge Pool in Northam.

It is being helped by funding from Bideford Bridge Trust and run in partnership with Torridge Pool, 5x30 Torridge and Age Concern Devon's 'Fit as a Fish' project.

The Social Fitness Morning will open on Tuesday, February 23, from 10am until 1pm, with free taster sessions in aqua aerobics, swimming, Latin dancing, a stretch class and gym inductions, led by qualified teachers and coaches. There will also be light refreshments and 'healthy eating' snacks.

The morning will run on a weekly basis in school term time and cost only 3.50.

It is all part of the partnership's incentive to encourage as many people as possible to 'get up, get out and get active.'

Trish Warren, co-ordinator for Fit as a Fish, which is funded through the Big Lottery Fund, said: "I am proud to be a part of this new project, which I am sure will be very successful and attract people who would not normally consider attending Torridge Pool as a means of keeping fit and active. The health benefits of swimming and other activities are well documented and the social element within the session, as well as the help and advice on offer, will create an enjoyable experience for all in a fun, relaxed and informative way.
