TOP tableau at Torrington Carnival on Saturday night was an entry by the Davey family which was literally "out of this world."

The local family who have become a feature of the town's annual carnival parades in recent years scooped the major awards by providing a close encounter with friendly aliens entitled "We come in Peace."

They won the Brian Couch Cup for the best local float overall and the News of the World Cup for the best original float.

Torrington Dental Practice staff pulled the Borough Cup for the best comic float with Bugsy Malone and Torrington guides won the Silver Jubilee Cup for the best juvenile float while also celebrating 100 years of guiding.

Torrington Cavaliers also made their usual mark by turning the clock back to medieval times, in keeping with their medieval castle bonfire currently under construction on the town's commons.

The Martini Girls from the Maya Indian Restaurant also caught the eye and skated off with the Roland Cup for the best walking group.
