IT is never too early to start thinking about pumpkins!The annual Pumpkin Competition at RHS Garden Rosemoor in Torrington is preparing to swell into immensity again as green-fingered contestants of all ages are invited to apply for their free pumpkin seeds.That just leaves eight months of careful cosseting, sleepless nights and a sudden irrational hatred towards slugs as - hopefully - a monstrous pumpkin blossoms forth from its tiny seed.Pumpkin Day, sponsored by Edwin Tucker and Sons Ltd, will take place at Rosemoor on October 25 and the garden is planning to make it bigger and better than ever.From the fantastic competition to a Pumpkin Shy, Cookery Demonstrations and Pumpkin Trails with prizes, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. There are four children's classes: Heaviest Pumpkin (from seed provided by Rosemoor,) Smallest Pumpkin (from seed provided by Rosemoor), Wackiest Pumpkin and Best Lantern. The two adult classes are Wackiest Pumpkin and Best Lantern. All winners will be given a rosette and a prize, but all entrants will receive a small reward.For an entry form, free packs of pumpkin seeds and helpful growing hints, send an A5 SAE to: Pumpkin Competition, RHS Garden Rosemoor, Great Torrington, Devon, EX38 8PH.Pumpkin seeds will also be given out at Rosemoor Garden's free Open Day on Saturday, March 7.
