BRAUNTON College's own "time team" is trying to unearth the secrets of a lofty hill enclosure or possible fort overlooking the village of Knowle.Pupils have been working with Dr Chris Carey and his colleagues from the University of Birmingham and the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon. The hilltop site commands a dominant position with views stretching to Woolacombe and Braunton and across the Taw Valley.Students have been studying the archaeology of the area in the classroom before following up with their on-site investigations. They have been using high-tech geophysical equipment to map the topography and underground features in their bid to interpret just what the ancient site was and how old it is. The next step will be to interpret what they find.Dr Carey said: "It is an old hill fort, but what is here we don't yet know. Following our investigations I will go away and analyse."Their project is being funded by Natural England, Devon County Council and the North Devon Biosphere.
