There for a reason

While nobody can condone verbal abuse, I fail to understand the reference to Mr Lambert’s wartime service in your story about the bus driver shouting at him for not using the pedestrian crossing.

Mr Lambert would have been expected to put his life at risk during the war, but this is no reason why he should now put himself, bus drivers, and passengers at risk by not using the safe crossing provided on a busy road.
