A flood alert has been issued for North Devon due to heavy rainfall overnight.

The Environment Agency is warning of possible flooding in Barnstaple, Braunton, Ilfracombe and Combe Martin from late morning through to this evening (Sunday).

Prolonged heavy rainfall overnight and throughout the day has caused river levels to rise and they remain high across North Devon.

Muddiford Road in Muddiford has been closed due to a landslide and flooding and Broomhill, near Barnstaple, has flooded, and the stream at the bottom of Whiddon Valley, in Barnstaple, has burst its banks and is running across Westacott Road.

A number of roads and low-lying land are expected to be affected by flooding, which could get worse throughout the day.

The Environment Agency is warning people to take care while driving and to monitor local weather conditions.
