NORTH Devon MP Nick Harvey has put down an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons to raise awareness of the "digital divide" he claims is putting some people in the South West at a disadvantage and "unable to enjoy the benefits of the 21st century just because they live in rural areas."Mr Harvey said the digital TV switchover would create a visible imbalance in access to communications as those unable to receive new digital technology would be left with no alternative. He said: "Appropriate structures need to be put in place that allow for everyone to have access to these services regardless of where they live. His Early Day Motion points out inadequate systems prevent people's access to the internet, mobile and television services and calls for the use of satellites and appropriate ground-based communications technology that remove transmission blind spots so that services are available to everyone, irrespective of location.
