No indication of whether North Devon stores will be affected by cost-cutting scheme
Tesco has announced plans to close 43 unprofitable stores in the UK – but has yet to indicate whether shops in North Devon will be affected.
Tesco has a strong presence in Northern Devon, with three stores in Barnstaple and one each in Ilfracombe, Bideford, Braunton and Westward Ho!
It’s all part of the supermarket giant’s plan to save £250million, which will include closing its staff pension scheme.
Plans for 49 new superstores have also been shelved.
A Tesco spokesperson told the Gazette on Thursday that the company hopes to be in a position to announce the stores which will close ‘in the next couple of weeks’.
“We started a consultation today and we would always talk to people in the affected stores before announcing anything,” he said.
Tesco has more than 3,300 stores across the country and has courted controversy in recent months with some senior executives leaving in the wake of an accounting scandal.
