Green Lanes Shopping Centre, Tuesday, August 4

The problem of nuisance and scam telephone callers will be tackled at a free event in Green Lanes Shopping Centre, Barnstaple, on Tuesday (August 4).

Police and industry experts invite anyone who has been a victim of scam calls, or their relatives, to go along from 10am and find out more about how to deal with them.

There will be advice, solutions and demonstrations on the best way to tackle the growing epidemic.

North Devon Council’s executive member responsible for community safety, Councillor Pat Barker, said the council had recently issued warnings about a number of fraudulent activities in the area including scam council tax calls, cold callers offering hedge cutting and even a letter banning ball games in a public park, all claiming to be the council.

“This event is all about raising awareness about scams so that people can recognise what to look out for and how to react if they suspect a scam,” she said.

Crime prevention officer Donna Woolway added: “This event has been organised to show our community how different organisations are there to protect and prevent them from being victims of this type of crime.

“By raising awareness of these frauds and working with the community, we hope to make North Devon a less profitable environment for criminals to operate in.”

Groups involved include CPR Call Blocker, Age UK, Citizens Advice, Safer North Devon and Devon and Cornwall Constabulary.
