One day at school turned into a 20-year career for ‘outstanding’ Jan.

A TEACHER has retired after 20 years’ outstanding service at a Barnstaple primary school.

Jan Willoughby initially arrived at Forches Cross Community Primary School to provide a day’s supply cover but found herself developing a relationship with the school and local community that would span two decades.

Mrs Willoughby, from Yelland, worked initially as a class teacher and in recent years, ran the Nurture Class in Key Stage 2.

She was officially recognised in the school’s latest Ofsted report as one of several ‘outstanding’ teachers in the school.

Head teacher Paul Wisken said she epitomised what it took to succeed at the school.

“Jan is a genuinely outstanding teacher, totally committed to serving the children of Forches and a pleasure to work with as a colleague.”

The school recognised her retirement with a special assembly, a variety of gifts and the staff celebrated with her at The Royal and Fortescue Hotel.
