A NEW scheme is being tried out in Bideford and Northam to help elderly and disabled people pay for taxi fares between the two parishes. The taxi voucher initiative, being run in conjunction with Torridge Community Transport, is being paid for by Devon County Council's Access to Services Project, with a local funder interested in supporting a similar, longer term, project if the trial is successful. In January and February, passengers can use a book of vouchers to benefit from significant savings on local taxi fares."All journeys will be local, within Bideford and Northam, so local businesses also stand to benefit from the scheme," said Jane Williams, Torridge Community Transport Association accessibility worker."It is hoped that the scheme can be implemented in other areas of Torridge in the future, giving agencies and employers the opportunity to buy into the scheme for their clients and employees. If you think you may be eligible to apply for vouchers or if you are a taxi company who would like to participate in the scheme, telephone Torridge Community Transport Association on (01237) 425522 for more information.
