WOULD-be taxi drivers wanting work in the Torridge area will be assessed by the Driving Standards Agency before being given a licence to drive a cab.Torridge is one of more than 100 councils throughout Britain which have agreed to take taxi testing on board.Driving examiners at the Barnstaple Driving Test Centre will assess the ability of applicants to drive safely and professionally in a 'real' environment.A statement from the DSA said that the test includes manoeuvres designed specifically with the operational taxi driver in mind and was set at a higher standard than the practical test for learner drivers.The taxi tests are operational from July 1.
