The Tarka Valley Railway is hosting a 10th anniversary celebration with an open day this Sunday (July 29).

The event will be at The Puffing Billy from 10am-4pm, where current section of railway track towards Bideford is due to be extended.

In April the group received the lease from Devon County Council for additional land to complete phase one of the railway extension towards Bideford.

Rod Garner, of the Tarka Valley Railway Group, said: “Since then, we have carried out drainage work, widened the Tarka Trail in the area concerned and erected a secure fence between the Trail and the line of the railway.

“Two panels of track (four x 60 foot steel rails and 48 concrete sleepers) have been purchased and delivered to site ready for installation. 30 tons of ballast stone has also been delivered.

“We plan to begin digging out, ballasting and tracklaying early in August.”

Come along on the day for model railway layouts, craft stalls, live music and a chance to look around the historic locos and see the plans for the railway.

Entry is free.
