Born on July 22, 1912, Betty Hughes turned 106 on Saturday, and enjoyed a party with family and friends. Betty was the second of four children, who grew up in Stockport and the Lake District. She trained as a domestic science teacher and went to work on the Isle of Wight, where sHe met her husband Tom, who was a teacher in the same school. Her daughter Ruth, one of three girls, said: They married on May 31, 1941. It was a frugal wedding because of the war, with rationing of food nd clothes. The couple had two other daughters, Wendy and Janet, and Betty is now a grandmother of four and great-grandmother of six. She moved to Barnstaple in 2009. Ruth said: Betty attributes her longevity to not worrying about things. She is always positive, sociable and been very active and eaten healthily.
