LONG-term plans for a playing field at Swimbridge have finally been given the green light by planners.

Proposals for a playing field, complete with cricket circle, youth and adult football pitches and children's play area, have been more than 30 years in the making.

The blueprints - together with a tandem application for 14 homes on adjacent farmland known as Glebe Field - were approved by North Devon Council's planning committee yesterday (Wednesday).

Committee member Cllr Rodney Cann said a formal recreation amenity was "long overdue" in Swimbridge.

"This has been going on since about 1974," Cllr Cann told the Gazette.

"It's a facility that is much needed in the village. Compromises have had to be made along the way but this is a win-win situation for everyone.
