Sainsbury’s Barnstaple donates new toys to some of the region’s most poverty stricken families.
THE gift of toys by Barnstaple’s Sainsbury’s store will ensure more than 25 families in North Devon and Torridge enjoy a happier Christmas this year.
The store has donated £250 of toys to local charity Encompass South West to make sure youngsters in some the region’s poorest families have a few more presents to open on Christmas Day.
The appeal was organised by Kat Watts at the store and immediately supported by colleagues, after she was approached by Claire Fisher from the charity, which works to support people living in poverty or crisis across the region.
“They are allocated to local families we have been working with throughout the year, who are struggling for a variety of reasons,” said Claire.
“More and more people are coming to us for help who are actually in work, as ‘luxuries’ such as Christmas are generally put on the back burner.
“Kat has been amazing to organise the appeal and this will make a huge difference.”
Store manager Stuart Kinghorn added: “We always like to support the smaller, more local charities and this fits the bill. The idea was so well received by all of our colleagues that we could hardly say no.”
