A group of local musicians from North Devon have collaborated to record and film a track to raise money and awareness for Barnstaple mental health charity Clarity.

The trio Starlings (Kieran Hennessy on drums, Jamie Adam on double bass and Jules Moberly on guitar) teamed up with singer songwriter Jim Jones to write and record a song they hope will help to change the lives of those affected by mental health.

Jules said: “A combination of events led us to deciding to collaborate and do something positive in the wake of tragedy.

“It was after the loss of a close friend of Jim’s - well-loved local musician Mike Collins, and the suicide of our manager of the band The Breaks Collective, coupled with the support Clarity had given to myself and others with mental health issues, that we decided to write and record a piece of music with a message.

“Weight Off My Mind speaks of lifting the burden of carrying mental and emotional anguish alone.”

Clarity supports people who experience mental health and emotional issues through counselling and group therapy. The charity is staffed by a team of volunteers.

The song was recorded live and filmed at drummer Kieran’s Audio Arts Recording Studio in Swimbridge.

Local award-winning film maker Matt Biggs documented the recording process, as well as created the artwork for the CD using stills from the video.

There will be a launch night at Lilico’s in Barnstaple on Thursday, December 13, with live performances by Jim Jones, Della and James Acoustic, Jules Moberly, Ali Pengelley and Malcolm MacDonald.

The CD will be available to buy on the night and there will also be a raffle with a range of generously donated prizes from local retail outlets and individuals.

The track is also available as a digital download via Amazon and iTunes. Plus is available to buy at various outlets including in Barnstaple: Discovery Records, Jewsons in the Pottington Industrial Estate, and Soundpad music store on Rolle Quay.

In Bideford at Millman guitars, Sounds Interesting record store and Market Music shop, and at The Plough Arts Centre in Torrington.

It can also be found at Landkey Stores, and Saunton Road Studios in Braunton.
