THERE was a surprise in store for thousands of beach goers who flocked to Woolacombe to see the UK National Sandcastle Competition yesterday (Sunday).

Two lucky teams taking part in this year's competition were given a helping hand by comedians Rory McGrath and Paddy McGuinness, in North Devon filming for the next series of their Channel 5 show, Rory & Paddy's Great British Adventure.

The celebrity sand sculptors joined teams from Dartington Crystal and Kitemare - two of 14 teams from around the region taking part in aid of the North Devon Hospice.

The comedians' unusual road trip around the UK sees them take part in a range of strange but quintessentially British sporting events that have so far included swamp soccer in Scotland and tree climbing in Hampshire.
