The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway (L&B) opened as an independent railway in May 1898.

For a short period of time the railway earned a fair return for it’s share holders, but for most of its life the railway was run at a loss until it’s purchase and subsequent closure by Southern Railway in 1935.

The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway Association was established in 1979 and a short section was reopened to passengers in 2004. This section has since been expanded to 1.4 kilometres.
